"The Hatchling", "A life changed", "Shelter" and "First Flight"

Four watercolours I painted in late 2006 and 2007 after reading His Majesty’s Dragon, the first book of Naomi Novik’s marvellous Temeraire-series, a Napoleonic Era AU that combines the historic setting with the fantastical element of dragons. For me, it provided an excuse to paint guys in naval uniforms (as if I needed one …).

When I heard that Subterranean Press was about to publish limited editions of these books and was considering to have them illustrated but was yet lacking an illustrator, I emailed them out of the blue and included the artworks. Some time later, I was commissioned to illustrate the first three books. Sometimes, things just work.

For anyone interested in acquiring the watercolours in the form of prints, they and plenty other artworks (mostly Tolkien and Beowulf) can be found at my Artflakes shop.
